Gigi Owen

Gigi is a Footprints mentor and qualitative social scientist extraordinaire. She mentored at the ‘22 Colorado camp, helping participants understand the social systems their projects exist within.

Dr. Gigi Owen is a qualitative social scientist at the Climate Assessment for the Southwest (CLIMAS), a NOAA climate research program at the University of Arizona. Her research seeks to understand if and how adaptation strategies help people fight the impacts of climate change. She currently works with a local food policy council to build equitable and sustainable food systems in southern Arizona. Gigi also evaluates the CLIMAS program to measure its contributions to building climate resilience in the Southwest and mentors students to practice actionable science. Gigi grew up in California and has lived in Tucson since 2003, after studying the ecology of desert grasslands in Hermosillo, Sonora. She enjoys baking, playing bass, guitar, and theremin, taking long bike rides in the desert, and is currently learning how to watercolor.
